Training and lineage.
Bharatanatyam, Bengaluru. First solo recital at twelve.
Lakshmi Gopalaswamy gave her first solo recital at twelve, at the Alliance Française in Bengaluru. She trained under Smt Padmini Rao and Smt Padmini Ramachandran, then through a long formative period under Guru Smt Narmada, with further study under Prof. M.R. Krishnamurthy, drawing on Tanjore and Pandanallur inflections. Her Carnatic training came from her mother, Dr Uma Gopalaswamy, and from Smt Neela Ramgopal.
She holds the Dr MGR Award from the Madras Music Academy, the Yagnaraman Award of Excellence from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, and the Sangithya Award, and is graded A-TOP by Doordarshan. A doctorate in cultural studies is in progress. She performed at the Soorya Dance and Music Festival in 2024 and 2025.
She is also a film actor and a two-time Kerala State Film Award winner, for Arayannangalude Veedu (2000) and Thaniye (2007). She holds the Karnataka State Award for Best Actress for Vidaaya (2015), and her screen work includes Aptharakshaka.
